A Work of Art
Friday, July 13, 2007
I think most of us already know that the Newfoundland Pony is a work of art, but now we have an actual sculpture representation of the Newfoundland Pony. The Newfoundland Pony Society was contacted by Alicia Strayer-Mangan of Michigan early last summer. Alicia had heard about the horrific barn fire at Sally Nielsen's farm, and thought her next endeavor might be able to further the cause of these critically endangered animals, Alicia has never seen a Newfoundland Pony, but she has worked from a multitude of photographs sent to her from our collection as well as critiques from some of our pony owning members. I think the end result is exceptional and I hope you will too.
A photograph has been included, but there are more available on the website www.whitepineequine.com so you can view all aspects of this sculpture. Also see Buy and Sell item. There are one hundred limited edition resin copies which can be hand painted by Alicia's husband Declan Mangan. The sculpture is titled Maberly Prince. Maberly is a small outport near Bonavista on the Trinity Bay side. Prince is probably the most common of all Newfoundland Pony names. I would like to thank Alicia for all her time and effort, not to mention her talent, towards this good cause. I think the result speaks for itself. I would also like to thank Barb Brown, Diana Royce, Donna Jesso, Colleen Carroll-Nisbett, Kim England, Sharon McBurney, Debbie Bray, Faith Clarkson, Alexis Christie, and Harry Hutchings for their input and helpful advice throughout the process. We must have examined close to a hundred photographs of the sculpture as it was evolving. However, everyone set aside their time because we felt the sculpture was important. It was a labour of love for the Newfoundland Pony.
Alicia is very generous and is donating one of the hand painted limited edition sculptures to the Newfoundland Pony Society. We hope to display it at The Rooms in St. John's, NL once we have our exhibit space secured.
